Easy Installation, Now What?
OK, installed the CP without any issues, now what?
- no setup of phpmyadmin (no ask for root password or any DB related prompts or setup questions!)
- database prefix is "fixed" with the username and no way to change it?
- how do you login to phpmyadmin for a newly created DB?
- How do I read email or monitor/admin it?
- What add-ons are available?
I'm no Linux or cPanel noob. I'm looking for a simple CP for a Linux VPS, don't need reseller functionality, just an easy to use CP that allows me to easily:
1) Create user accounts for different projects
2) install apps & CMS (Joomla, Wordpress, Softalicious "1-click" apps)
3) Administer MySQL databases through phpmyadmin
4) Create custom websites manually (need a file manager - surprised it isn't included)
5) Add email accounts, forward email addresses
6) Add domains (bought through an external registrar) and subdomains
7) Administer ssh accounts and keys
Everything else is nice to have, like monitoring for example (why not integrate monit?)
Looking at the "documentation" page shows a number of installation "howtos" for fail2ban, ClamAV, SpammAssasin etc, things the CP should help with rather than all this manual setup.
This panel's UI is clean, relatively simple and straightforward, but it's not all that intuitive or setup very well after initial installation. VestaCP needs a "Essential things to do after installation of VestaCP" forum sticky or HowTo webpage. Maybe VestCP is just too early in it's development for me. I have looked at Virtualmin, ISPConfig 3, Ajenti and InterWorx and none really seem to work like cPanel. InterWorx has a flashy and very refined UI, but I don't want the recurring cost it comes with.
Any pointers, info or guides to getting started anyone can point out would be greatly appreciated.
Thx!

Re: Easy Installation, Now What?
For phpmyadmin access you need first create a mysql user in your vestacp ( DB ) and not, you cant remove db prefix.
File manager are available as non-free addon.
All you want to user are in panel, fordward mails under mail, when you create account you can do it.
Just look closer all options, is very easy panel :)

Re: Easy Installation, Now What?
I created a db user with vestaCP, but couldn't login with that user. I tried to prefix the username I entered with the prefix it showed on the UI (admin_adminuser was the resultant username). But phpmyadmin said invalid credentials.
Re: Easy Installation, Now What?
vesta-noob , can you tell us more about your OS and mysql version?

Re: Easy Installation, Now What?
The MySQL is whatever version Vesta installs. I believe it's 5.5. Php version is 7 surprisingly enough. OS is Debian Linux 8.7, 2GB, 2 core CPU VPS.
I've invested a couple of days in Vesta now, and have been trying to figure out how to do some very basic things. It's got promise but I think it's time to move on.
One thing a good panel will do is help guide users on how to establish a functional, spam limited email stack and provide guidance in how to monitor it. As a cPanel replacement Vesta may be capable BUT NOT OUT OF THE BOX so to speak. And that will hinder adoption as it is for myself. I don't want a panel built by geeks for geeks, I need a panel built to be easy for those with limited technical skills. Guides, tutorials, how-tos, and basic configuration steps for common tasks are needed.
Many of those topics are present in the VestaCP FAQ, however simple things are missing that should be part of the Vesta installation, such as walking the user through DB installation and securing MySQL. The user is never even provided credentials so he can use phpmyadmin to create a new DB and login credentials for it. This is basic stuff the installer should handle, rather than requiring newbies to go figure it out and how it relates to VestaCP.
</rant>
Anyway, after a second look at Virtualmin and interacting with it in more depth, I believe it suit my needs quite nicely.

1) Easy to do with VestaCP.vesta-noob wrote:I'm looking for a simple CP for a Linux VPS, don't need reseller functionality, just an easy to use CP that allows me to easily:

2) VestaCP it's a control panel, not a 1-click app install.
3) Easy to do with VestaCP. phpMyAdmin is installed with VestaCP if you choose MySQL (same for phpPgAdmin).
4) VestaCP has a file manager. You have to pay for it.
5) Really easy to do within VestaCP.
6) Really, really easy to do with VestaCP.
7) Yes, you can't do that with VestaCP.
Are you sure?I'm no Linux or cPanel noob.
Certainly, VestaCP it's not for you.
