I think support will be in 0.9.8-19 or 20

I hope it'll be sooner in 0.9.8-19 with new Ubuntu.
New OS already appear in main hosters locations.

I think one big hurdle in upgrading to Debian 9 is that it supports PHP7.0 as default and not PHP5.6 which is a must for many legacy apps. PHP 5.6 will have to be installed from backports or third party repos.

Devs would need to Issue a warning about this to the users first.

I think it'll be like new Ubuntu 16.04 with PHP 7.0 by default.
