FTP access problem

Hi,
I've setup a new server instance using Google Cloud, installed vestacp (looks great so far) and created keys for SSH access. I have also enabled ftp in the vesta control panel for the default domain.
I am able to ftp in using FileZilla ftp client but can't access the default root web folder. When I try to enter mywebserver.example.com I'm getting "permission denied". Folder permissions are currently 751, tried a "chown" via SSH but also won't work stating "Permission denied".
Tried creating new domain and still no access.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
