I was a great supporter of VestaCP. It was the most amazing panel ever! However, if you are using it on production servers with serious websites, you need to be assured that everything works like it should.
For me the issue was never the lack or slow development of new features. It was all about communication, timely bugfixes and security fixes.
I was having a very difficult time with Ubuntu 18.04 when it was no supported for a year after its release and the team was either unresponsive or not admitting that there were issues with the installation. The milestone was when imperio publicly insulted me.
I consider myself very lucky that I found HestiaCP. The major difference is that I have the piece of mind that communication is excellent, respectful and issues are solved fast. And the truth is that if Vesta didn’t exist Hestia wouldn’t either. And we need to be grateful for Vesta’s team contribution for initially creating that awesome product.
It’s not that Hestia cannot be improved. The team there is also small and they cannot allocate all their time for the project. But they are very open to community’s contribution (PRs) and take issues and user’s feedback very seriously, in a fast and efficient way.
I really hope that there was never a need for a Vesta fork. But unfortunately here we are. Users have now choices and can decide themselves what best suits them best.
