You can check mysql error log files for errors (/var/log/mysql* /var/lib/mysql/*.err)
Mysql tables can be repaired with command: mysqlcheck --auto-repair -A
If server has 512M of RAM or less, you can adjust innodb pool memory in /etc/my.cnf with innodb_buffer_pool_size=64M, default value is 128M.

No, but many connections can eat memory and when mysql cannot allocate some memory it crashes. Also crashed mysql tables can crash mysqld, especially at backup time.
