New Extension Catalog for VestaCP
  • Quote

Post by emardotcom » Mon Jan 05, 2015 8:47 pm

First off I would like to mention that I love this control panel it's light fast and features a lot of free open source software that is modern. But every time I here the word commercial, it makes me think VestaCP is looking for a way to get away from free software, because they may have realized that they could make money off of this project.

I haven't contributed a lot to this control panel but I would be willing to contribute more if someone would look at my pull requests in Github, I'm not saying that no one has looked at my requests but instead that it seams the developers are to busy to keep up with it. I can only assume this has to do with time being spent on commercial products.

My question is will I be able to make commercial products to? So I can also make money. The reason I say this is because Open Source has little room for making money unless you plan people to donate to your cause. I would recommend making a extension system that people can add free and paid plugins, sort of like what Plesk 12 has.
Click bellow to view the full catalog. You may notice, they have paid and free versions extensions:

Each paid extension or plugin can be linked to a license key. The developer could donate the money to VestaCP or keep it for them selfs. Also VestaCP could charge a fee to host the extension on there website and mark the extension safe.

Now that would be better then making one public/free and one private/paid version of VestaCP. Less maintenance, so we can focus on straightening the source code.

None the less, the purpose of this discussion is not to cause a problem with VestaCP Staff but instead to create clarity. Because I feel that going in the wrong direction will stop a lot of people from contributing to this project.

Could you please explain what your plans are for VestaCP? Also do you need moderators? A lot of the website is outdated, this forum is full of spammers, Github is at a crawl.

If you like I can send you my resume so you can review it I would like to help, I love coding and designing.

I appreciate you for taking the time to write a post. If you think this feature should be incorporated you should let the developers know your interested, thats the point of this Topic not to put down Vesta or promote other Control Panels.
