Adding subdomains in VestaCP
  • Quote

Post by lukeseven » Fri Apr 08, 2016 12:52 pm

Hi,

I am just wondering if it's possible to have wordpress multisite installed on maindomain.com with wildcard on " currently all is working fine" but when I add a subdomain like test.maindomain.com from within VestaCP in order to have another WP installation in its own directory with its own database ? I end up on the WP sign up page of the maindomain.com

I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

Can anybody help here, please ?

Thanks in advance

Hello.

I just added a new 'A' record to my domain dns configuration in my registrar configuration panel pointing to the IP adress of the server where vestaCP is working. Then I went to vestaCP and just added a new web with the subdomain.domain.* form.

In the link below there is a tutorial where you will see a basic explanation and some screenshots showing how to set a subdomain using vestaCP and freenom as DNS registrar. It is in spanish (sorry) but may be useful for you or someone else. Good luck.

Hello and thank you for your replies guys,

also I am sorry it took me so long to get back here. Actually, I've been playing with another server which I made for playing with things like that.

I am able to get it working like you suggested. That's something what I already knew, and it works fine with single WordPress install, however, as soon as I add a wild A record to my DNS zone file and turn on WordPress multisite I can access the back-end with the correct test.maindomain.com subdomain I created in wordpress MS but if I just visit the subdomain test.maindomain.com I end up on the site I created using A record and adding new domain in VestaCP for example billing.maindomain.com. All is working fine except subdomains created in the WP multisite.

So just wondering, why if I enter the billing.maindomain.com ( created in VestaCP using record A "billing" Server IP) it displays the correct website but if I go to test.maindomain.com it keeps showing me the billing.maindomain.com site :(

Just to make things clear and tell you what I've been trying to achieve. I found out that it's probably not possible. I know how to add sub-domain and A records to my DNS zone and make things working, however, when I use a wildcard " * " in my DNS zone file in order to be able install WP Multisite with subdomains... the "billing" A record seems to be working for that separate WP install billing.maindomain.com but those subdomains created in WordPress Multisite like test.mydomain.com do not.

Any idea or suggestion will be appreciated if you understand what I mean ?

P.S. I just wanted to make my life easier doing it this way, It's not big deal if I cannot, you know.

Hi,

yes I get it. I just thought, that is a way to have only wildcard on as it's required for WP Multisite to add sub-domains from within the WP. However, I needed to install another single WP into its own folder "for example" billing.maindomain.com by adding a new domain (subdomain) in VestaCP. There is no need to add the A record "billing" if I use already a wildcard...
But it just doesn't work that way as well.

I was wondering there might be a way to get it working like I wanted. If it's not possible, then forget it.

Thank you for your time anyway.
