repair permissions for /usr/ Topic is solved
repair permissions for /usr/
Hello. The user of VPS write with web-authorization problems.
But nothing helped (DISK_QUOTA='unlimited' for admin user, and so on as described on the forum).
During the discussion, the previous VPS backup was overwritten.
And then she remembered, that she had changed the rights to the directory /usr/
chmod -R 777 /usr/.
Because she installed the new program, and decided that it would be better. :(
Perhaps this damaged the authorization (and perhaps not only this).
There are a lot of files in the directory /usr. Is there a way to repair the correct rights, except to manually compare the rights ???
-There was no proper backup either,
-There are a lot of specific settings on the server. And it's very sad if there is no way to repair, other than to re-create the server from scratch ...

Re: repair permissions for /usr/
That is very unfortunate. The more unfortunate issue is your backup. As you've said and understand, '/usr/' contain mixed of libraries so is very difficult to fix permission. A new server setup it is. Maybe keep the current server so you can copy some of the config files over if there are customization. If you have Vesta backup files, then you can just restore users to the new server. Lesson learned?
1. Backup server image
2. Backup Vesta users backup file
3. Backup remotely
4. That user should not have root level permission, chmod 777 and to '/usr/' - double whammy?

Re: repair permissions for /usr/
You should be very careful when doing chown -R and chmod commands as even a small mistake can ruin your whole server.
So as suggested, you should create a new server in parallel, setup your site/domains and then manually move your data from old to new server using tar/scp.
What exactly did she wanted to achieve by changing mode of /usr ?
All site related files reside in /home, an average user should not need to go into /usr except if installing some customer application.

Re: repair permissions for /usr/
noogen so right, much faster move to another server with backups.
