Email server set up
  • Quote

Post by Bfred » Fri Apr 24, 2015 10:31 am

Hi!

I have been playing with Vesta for a few days now and really like its interface and setup. Unfortunately I am trying to set up a mail server/account for a domain and it's not working as in: I can' t send and I can't receive.

I've been doing some research without being able to find much information so I thought I would ask here. Here is the current challenge I am facing:
Currently the www and . are not hosted on this box
I just need a mail server and maybe in 2/3 weeks I'll move the website over
When I send email to the domain I don't receive anything on both side (no error message), and when I email from the box (using roundbox) my email gets automatically rejected because the rDNS is not correct.
The DNS are handle elsewhere and I have MX entries as well as mail. and pop. pointing to the box. MX entries are both mail. and the domain without any prefix. (I copied what the dns entries are on Vesta interface.

Now I don't know where to set up the SPF thingy and am confused about the rDNS since I plan to have more than one domain on the same IP. Currently the rDNS is mail.domain.com (with the actual domain instead of domain.com).

If someone could give me some directions or point me to something worth reading I would really appreciate.

Thank you very much.

Fred

If you're use external dns, then you need check
1) MX record (domain, mail.domain) ?
2) A-record for domain, mail.domain
3) SFP with your IP
4) PTR with your hosting support
5) local dns on your server

There is short list for work.

OK thanks. That's a good start which seems to highlight some missing points to me :-)

I'll repost along the road if I have more or new issues.

Thank you very much.
