Does mail server need to be installed for sending notifications?

Hi,

I use web mail elsewhere so I did not install Vesta with mail. Here I set mail to no: http://vestacp.com/install/ and installed on Ubuntu 16.04.

I installed ssmtp and it works for sending test mails with ssmtp and my PHP mail scripts, however, when I do a manual backup I do not get an email notification from Vesta: https://i.imgur.com/lPaU8Yc.png

Does anyone know why this might be? I enabled UFW, do I need to open any ports on UFW? I would like to get mail notifications working but I do not want the full memory usage of things like spamassassin/spamd. I even installed clamav manually so it would not run as a daemon and thus would only use lots of memory when I manually run a scan.

Thanks.
