Does using mail require using the nameserver Vesta setup?

I installed VestaCP. No issues there.
First site works fine -- adding private nameservers requires contacting my registrar as there is no way to just do it online so I just used the name servers for my hosting provider.
Site works fine but I can't seem to get e-mail to work. Don't know if this is because I'm messing up the MX records or if VestaCP actually requires use of the nameservers it created for e-mail to work.
Can someone settle this for me just so I'm not wasting my time?
