MS / Exchange Mail Box Setup
  • Quote

Post by Vestanovice » Wed Nov 05, 2014 12:26 am

I am new to the whole vps but find it a great option in comparison to Web hosting companies. Unfortunately I have been trailing forums for a while, looking for a step by step guide on how to configure ms exchange with vesta control panel. I have read that vesta cp is similar to cpancel which is quite straight forward to set up, so am I missing something obvious? Is there any tutorials or code / programs out there to help configure ms exchange mailboxes?

Lolwhut?

You cannot configure ms exchange with VestaCP.

Microsoft Exchange Server is calendaring software, a mail server and contact manager developed by Microsoft. It is a server program that runs on Windows Server. Vesta is a hosting control panel that runs on Linux servers.

You may want to read up on this and save yourself a whole lot of time & trouble.

Mika,

Thank you for getting to the point.

Out of curiosity I have read 'cpanel' is a Linux based program, why does 'MX exchange mail' work with 'cpanel' but not 'Vesta cp'?

thanks

It doesn't. Why do you think it does?

I think there is some mixup in terminology in this thread; I'm no MS expert and this may not be 100% right, but broadly:
  • Standard internet mail is IMAP (plus other protocols, but that is the operative one) - Vesta uses Dovecot to implement IMAP
  • Exchange = Microsoft's mail server, which supports IMAP and also MAPI - Microsoft's custom mail protocol which also supports calendaring, free/busy, etc etc (maybe IMAP is not always enabled on Exchange?)
  • Outlook = Micorosoft's mail client, which can connect to both IMAP and MAPI accounts
So:
  • A standard email program - Thunderbird etc - can connect to Exchange, but just for mail, not the calendars etc
  • Outlook can connect to IMAP - eg on Vesta - but again, just for email, not for other features
  • Only with Outlook <> Exchange do you use MAPI and get other facilities
Having said that, there is OpenChange, an open source implementation of Exchange, so that you can use the extra facilities of Outlook without needing an actual MS Exchange server. Perhaps cPanel supports this? If this is what you need, I suggest looking at Zentyal - which is a more group-oriented control panel, rather than Vesta, which is more of an internet server setup.
