550 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable

Hi guys.

This is my first time I'm configuring mail server.
I have vesta cp installed. There I have mydomain.com
I created a mail account: [email protected]
I'm able to send emails from [email protected] using my webmail

When I send an email from my gmail to [email protected] I get: 550 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable

mydomain.com is registered with 1and1.com, I added A Record and pointed to my VPS. Currently I use their name servers.

As I understand I need to configure MX record for my domain so it uses my VPS mail server. I would like to know how to do it right. My questions:

1). I have only 1 VPS. Should I continue using 1and1.com name servers or setup my own ones as subdomains?
2). For MX record: should I use subdomain ( like mail.mydomain.com ), then should I configure anything else for that subdomain ?
3). Any other configurations I should do for my mail server?

Many thanks in advance

UPDATE:

I created 2 subdomains in my domain panel (1and1.com), both pointed to my VPS IP
I added 2 MX records and put those subdomains there

I created mail.mydomain.com in Vesta CP on my VPS (I think this is an unnecessary step)

Now I can send emails to [email protected]

Would be great to hear any comments / advises
