DNS system issues with Digital Ocean
DNS system issues with Digital Ocean
I'm rather new at this so please bear with me. I've searched this forum, seen all of the postings on DNS and Digital Ocean. I'd like to use the Vesta DNS control panel for everything.. we've got a lot of subdomains to point to, and I think it makes sense to use Vesta for everything.
Most instructions point to http://vestacp.com/docs/#how-to-setup-v ... ameservers
I've set up two name servers ns1, ns2.mywebsite.com. at the DNS controller for the Digital Ocean. (Its not clear, but I assume I'm supposed to delete ns1, ns2, ns3.digitalocean.com. ? Is that right? )
When I try to overwrite those NS addresses I get an immediate error,
Ouch, ouch ouch. Got it. It turns out that I was going into the DNS records in the Vesta control panel by selecting "list XX records" Total fail. I failed to see the edit button towards the right hand of the Vesta initial DNS screen. My bad. From that point on the instructions match.
Info offered up here for anybody else who gets stuck.
thanks,
Zip

Those instructions just don't make sense to me. #4 above, change template to child-ns ? Packages? Default? Huh? what does that mean? I'm not seeing anything that looks at all like that. What I do see at the bottom of my Vesta DNS listing is @ A record pointing to my Digital Ocean droplet, then I see two @ NS records pointing to ns1, ns2.localhost.ltd.Vesta Control Panel
Once the private nameservers registration is complete, you need to configure Vesta Control Panel.
1. Add domain yourdomain.com (leave DNS Support mark checked)
2. Go to DNS menu
3. Click on edit under yourdomain.com
4. Change template to child-ns
5. Go to Packages menu
6. Edit package called default
7. Set ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com as nameservers
When I try to overwrite those NS addresses I get an immediate error,
Obviously something is wrong? Anybody been here before? Anyone have more accurate instructions? How do I get this thing to work?Editing DNS Record → Error: corresponding A record ns2.yourdomain.com does not exist

Re: DNS system issues with Digital Ocean
Thank you! I'm also using Digital Ocean so this was very helpful.
Would you or anyone happen to know the answer to this related question: In Vesta, in the DNS section, when you edit a domain, there's a field called "SOA". Do you know what's supposed to go in there?

Re: DNS system issues with Digital Ocean
I am using child-ns with Digital Ocean since long time I never face any problem. Just make sure your name server should registered and resolving name (ns1.yourdomain.com to vps ip using http://ping.eu/nslookup/ZipZit wrote:Update: for anybody else using Digital Ocean, this document describes what should take place on that end of the conversation.

Zip.
No need to add some thing in Digital Ocean's Name Servers.
Re: DNS system issues with Digital Ocean
Hi hafeezksa,
Would you be able to provide step by step instructions for a newbie? Or let me know if the below steps look right to you?
In domain registrar
1. Create ns1.example.tld and ns2.example.tld glue records and point them both to the Digital Ocean droplet IP address. (Should I skip ns3 or it doesn't matter? DO has 3 nameservers.)
2. Set nameservers to ns1.example.tld and ns2.example.tld.
In Vesta CP
1. Under "Web", add example.tld.
2. Under "DNS", edit domain and select child-ns template. (On that same page, what should go under SOA?)
3. Under "Packages", edit "default" and set ns1.example.tld and ns2.example.tld as nameservers.
In Digital Ocean
Should be able to ignore existing settings in Digital Ocean's DNS section, correct?
Much thanks!

Ans: skip ns3, it will take up to 24 hours for dns names activation with your domain register. (I have few websites that’s why I am pointing one ip for ns1 and ns2)
For verification check here http://ping.eu/nslookup/ if ns1.example.tld resolving name to vps ip then ok, now you can use own DNS name.
2. Set nameservers to ns1.example.tld and ns2.example.tld.
ok
In Vesta CP
1. Under "Web", add example.tld. (ok)

(ok) In SOA write ns1.example.tld
3. Under "Packages", edit "default" and set ns1.example.tld and ns2.example.tld as nameservers. (ok)

Yes, ignore it
