Can't connect to mysql server from phpmyadmin - Please help!

Hi, I'm having an issue connecting to mysql server from vestacp phpmyadmin page. I'm able to launch the phpmyadmin but after entering username/password I get error "can't connect to mysql server"

I've tried a number of things from similar issues posted on various threads here with no success. I have not seen any place where VestaCP team has been able to confirm or not if there's a known issue and what fix is. I'm a new install using CentOS 6 with VestaCP version Vesta 0.9.8-16... Appreciate any help to resolve this!
