$CFG->dataroot is not configured properly, directory does not exist or is not accessible! Exiting

I installed VestaCP and used softaculous to install Moodle. After the installation, I opened the site only to see this error message: $CFG->dataroot is not configured properly, directory does not exist or is not accessible! Exiting.
I checked and the dataroot was configured properly.
Any ideas on what might be the cause of this problem?
