I need PHP 7.X - Should I upgrade Debian from 8 to 9 or just update PHP?
I am currently running Debian 8 and for my next project I need PHP 7.1 or greater.
I know that there is the possibility of installing PHP 7.X alongside of PHP 5.6 but I don't know if that is the way to go.
What do you recommend?
Should I upgrade Debian to 9 and then install 7.X or should I just add 7.X to my current setup?
Are there any specific, generally accepted, guides I should follow?
I have one active client with WordPress, so I would prefer a smooth upgrade.
Thanks!

Hi
That depends of your need and knowledge,
I always recommend upgrade, if you have plans to long time is better have last system, take a look debian 8 suppots ends next year https://wiki.debian.org/LTS
So in this year and half of next year you will upgrade or change your server to debian 9, so, is better do it now.
In any case you can install additional version of PHP on your server or upgrade your php 5.x to 7 in both cases upgrade or additional versión your web and php will have same performance, so all this situation depends of your needs

Thank you.
What steps do I need to take after I upgraded Debian? Will I have to upgrade PHP manually or will it be done automatically?
Do I have to tinker with config files after that?

I successfully upgraded to Debian 9 and PHP 7.0. I followed a guide from this forum and everything went well.
