Nameserver/vanity don't work
  • Quote

Post by jhoan.gamarra » Wed Jan 06, 2016 4:33 pm

I set my own nameservers with a domain that I have in godaddy, but I have problems because they are not propagate and I followed all the steps in the documentation.
I have a server cloud with digital ocean and my domain with godaddy and I have my own nameserver to use it on my other domains.
can someone please help me with that?
I appreciate your collaboration

With godaddy:
1. Login to your godaddy account
2. Goto Domains
3. Goto Manage DNS settings for the domain
4. Scroll down to find Host Names
5. Set your NS (example NS1)
6. Set the IP address for that NS
7. Set the Second NS (example NS2)
8. Set the IP address for the 2nd NS

Now, wait. Godaddy takes a moment or two to update (can take about 5 minutes). Click the refresh at the top then:

1.Scroll to find Nameservers
2.Click Manage
3.Select Custom
4.Add or Edit
5.Type in the NS you just setup (example ns1.domain.tld and ns2.domain.tld)
6.Click save

This part takes some time to propogate (I've seen as little as 20 minutes all the way up to 48 hours...be patient)
While thats taking it's time, lets work on Vesta: (if adding)
1. Click Domains
2. Click Add
3. Type in your domain.tld
4. Make sure it has the right IP address
5. Make sure DNS and mail are checked
6. Click DNS at the top
7. Check the records are created
8. Click Edit
9. Change the template to Child-NS
10. Under SOA make sure that's the first NS (example ns1.domain.tld)
11. Click DNS at the top again
12. Click List Records
13. Scroll down til you see ns1.domain.tld
14. Edit the ns2 right below that to your ns2.domain.tld. (IMPORTANT make sure the . is at the end)

Now lets add that pesky hostname record
1. At the top click Add DNS record
2. Make sure your domain.tld is greyed out (this makes sure it's for the right domain)
3. In the record field type in your hostname.domain.tld
4. Type is A
5. Type your IP in the IP or Value field
6. Click add at the bottom

A way to check your domains (for anyone) DNS:

For those of you wanting to add IPv6 addresses:

Click DNS at the top
Click add record for the domain you want
In the record field just add @
Change the type to AAAA
Add your IPv6 address to the IP address or Value
Click Add

Done.

VestaCP web server is currently not configured to use IPv6.

VestaCP might not, but DNS is. I get messages to my Gmail via the IPv6 address. I mean, it's not defaulting to IPv6 it's just a backup.
