EXIM not sending mail; messages are frozen

EXIM not sending mail; messages are frozen and users get message saying it has been delayed. Happening on two freshly install Ubuntu servers.
Exim log shows messages like R=dnslookup T=remote_smtp defer (-53): retry time not reached for any host
and things like
Connecting to alt4.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com [74.125.28.27]:25 ... failed: Connection timed out (timeout=5m)
Have checked DNS, MX etc and now stuck!
EDIT - I use VULTR for hosting, it seems they block port 25. Have raised a ticket with them and will update.
As an aside, should hostname -i return the public IP of the server or 127.0.0.1?
