Ioncube nightmare - php -i | grep extension_dir doesn't give me a module number

I'm severely frustrated. Can't seem to get the ioncube steps to work for me. First I tried the million and one steps of Servermom and couldn't get past uncompressing. I've gone through so many versions of steps and have a great headache as a consequence.
Easiest would be for you to ask Softaculous not to enable protection for the premium version of Softaculous.
But if ioncube is necessary could you please make it easier to load!
How many tutorials did I have to work through to understand there's Zend Guard and Zend Optimizer. Optimizer is for deprecated php and Zend Guard for current versions. So I need Zend Guard. Now no one has given enough info about exactly WHERE one must upload the Zend Guard tar.gz folder. Bottom line I've been completely unable to do it. I'm not dumb. It's just way more complicated than it should be.
OK now I'm with Brian - I've skipped the Zend Guard - its loaded but doesn't want to be uncompressed. I do well with Brian's steps to download ioncube until i get to activating the ioncube_loader_lin_5.6.so module. When Digital Ocean asks to find the module number and I use the command below there's no module number:
php -i | grep extension_dir
This is what comes up when I use the above command:
extension_dir => /usr/lib64/php/modules => /usr/lib64/php/modules
sqlite3.extension_dir => no value => no value
Is there anyone out there who has simplified the installation with a really proper tutorial that explains BOTH Zend Guard installation and Ioncube. ServerMom's doesn't work for me. Neither does Ocean. From all of the inquiries I see I'm not the only one who is frustrated with this.
Can Softaculous please simplify the protection of their premium license - otherwise they're not going to get what they want. I'm quite ready to give up now. Who needs Softaculous anyway!
