What do you mean which is best? Paid or free?
For free use letsencrypt, for anything other, buy which is suitable for you ;)

Paid certificates difference, I think you can check here: https://www.thawte.com/ssl/

I think it is about the warranty.

Some are cheap, and some are expensive.
More expensive, higher warranty.

Depending on your purpose.
If you are going to run a regular blog, then free SSL is fine.
But if you're going to create an e-commerce portal, then it's better to use commercial ones. For a small business I usually recommend Comodo. It's cheap, secure and trusted SSL. Maybe you'll need something else if you have a larger business - it's hard to recommend anything not knowing your specs.

I don't usually complicate myself with that and I use the free one that my own hosting provides me.

I recommend to go for EV SSL Certificate to protect your ecommerce website. An Extended Validation SSL will offer:

-Full business validation
-Green address bar with business name
-Https
-A dynamic Trusted Site seal
-Padlock
-Google ranking boost

An EV SSL certificate best option for large website like ecommerce. It is recognized by all mobile and web browsers. Its 256 bit encryption gives piece in mind for data security.

For EV SSL, Comodo CA Authority is the best option at low price compared to any other CA.
