Permissions and ownership for WordPress

OK, I left my user as admin. I moved my WordPress sites over from a cPanel VPS to my Vesta VPS. It's blazing fast, and I love it, but I can't seem to get my ownership and/or permissions correct. I can upload pictures (as long as it doesn't need to create a folder), but my theme is not generating thumbnails properly. I've used both the default and phpcgi templates with the same issue.

It's a Ubuntu server. Output of uname -a
