Dovecot Won't Start

This was very sudden and I don't know what cased it. The Dovecot error files do not provide good info at all. But anyways it simply stopped working and now will not start. I am running Ubuntu 14.04 and notice that /var/run/dovecot is inexistant, could this be related? Here is the mail.log file:

Code: Select all

Dec 16 07:51:03 USERNAME exim4: ALERT: exim paniclog /var/log/exim4/paniclog has non-zero size, mail system possibly broken
Update!

I noticed that somehow /var/run/dovecot folder is completely missing which is a key folder for making dovecot run. Is there a way I can retrieve this without reinstalling? If not, how do I reinstall without messing up data?

Could you please provide us with the /var/log/dovecot.log file if it exist.

The /var/log/dovecot error file was blank. That's why I posted mail.error above. It seems the mail.error file has some relation since the error shown above is the same day the mail server somehow stopped and /run/dovecot vanished.

Will reinstalling it remove my current mail domains/data at all? I don't think it's with the data storage that's the problem but rather the files to actually run the software are gone. So will reinstalling cause any difficulties?

Not 100% sure, but I don't think it will seeing how everything is gone all ready. Maybe imperio has a better answer for you. I reported this thread maybe he will reply.
