Basic DNS question
  • Quote

Post by giodelgado » Sat Jan 10, 2015 5:37 am

Hello I just have a basic question about my setup, I don't know if this setup is correctly configured:

hostname: server1.name1.com
Under admin webistes: name1.com
Under DNS :name.com using template:child-ns so I can use ns1.name1.com and ns2.name.com

Users: myname
Default name servers: ns1.localhost.ltd and ns2.localhost.ltd <---- is this correctly configured? or do I have to change them to ns1.name1.com and ns2.name1.com, I already pointed my registrar to ns1.name1.com and ns2.name1.com and can login with FTP and can see my website on the browser.

The problem occurs when I point this user name to ns1.name1.com I can't see any folders with FTP

I'm just asking if I should leave ns1.localhost.ltd as my name servers for this user.

Yes you need to change ns1.localhost.ltd and ns2.localhost.ltd to ns1.name.com and ns2.name.com. Also when you change the dns template to child-ns, Vesta will change ns1.name.com and ns2.name.com to the default ip address of the domain name so if your using more than one ip for your name servers you will need to update your dns records to the correct ip addresses.

Thanks for your reply, when I remove ns1.localhost.ltd for a diff dns I can no longer access ftp, everything works with ns1.localhost.ltd I'm just wondering if it's the correct setup because it doesn't seem right...

Maybe I didn't explain the way I should but this is the scenario again:

Admin added under settings custom dns1 and dns2

User:John
Default Name Servers: ns1.localhost.ltd and ns2.localhost.ltd

Added website: ComputerGeek.com (madeup name)

With those settings I can access FTP under ftp.ComputerGeek.com but if I add dns1 and dns2 to user John that I have setup under admin it breaks FTP and doesn't connect.

My registrar for computergeek.com is already pointing to the custom name servers and I can access web.

I think I got it fixed now using my custom dns, the issue was I didn't remove default domain and default dns after installation.

Is it a normal behaviour whenever I type ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com to display my main website? mydomain.com?
