You can try to change /etc/issue - Ubuntu version to 15.04 for example and try to install.

Is there any timeline for supporting 16.04 LTS? Will 0.9.8-16 support it?

Got a brand new VPS and would like to use 16.04 to get some good time out of it rather than installing something that is considerably EOL.

Most likely will not.
We need time to test new version.

A 16.04 was released not so long ago, the appearance of support for new version is not instant.

Just adding a me-too on this - I favour Ubuntu for server installs because of the predictable LTS release/support schedule. Am a big fan of Vesta and have a couple of new installs to do soon so am very keen to see 16.04 support. (Not really bothered about interim versions between LTS.)

If you guyz much care about LTS releases, I bet Debian is a much better/safer/stable option. Vesta Works great on latest Debian 8.5 Jessie... a server you can configure, secure and then forget about!
